Cupano ‘s Brunello di Montalcino is a red that, breaking out of the more traditional schemes, has managed to reach extraordinary levels of quality. Produced exclusively with Sangiovese Grosso grapes, it ages on the fine lees in Bourguignonne barriques for at least 3 years with a variable percentage of new oak. It is bottled 4 years after the harvest. The result is a formidable wine in terms of balance, with guaranteed longevity potential. It is a Brunello of excellence, strong in its terroir and embellished and graceful by the savoir-faire and gentle manners of the French.
Reviews:
- Vinous: Cupano’s 2015 Cupano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is stunning. It wafts up from the glass with a display of cedar dust giving way to black cherries, mixed with notes of sage, crushed stone and hints of smoked meats. The textures are silky and pliant in feel, with a combination of juicy acids and ripe red fruits that create a high-energy and fully satisfying impression. It’s structured yet remarkably fresh and balanced, tapering off to sweet herbal notes, hints of tobacco and mocha. The only fault I can find is that it’s so easy to like already – but is that really a fault? Bravo. Enjoy this now for its primary intensity, or cellar for three to five years for a softer and broader expression.
Producer Information
Cupano is a family-run winery, which represents an excellence of the Montalcino area . It was born out of the love for this land of Ornella Tondini, a journalist, and Lionel Cousin, director and director of photography, who in the 1990s decided to leave Paris and their professions to move to Tuscany. In 1994 they bought the Podere Centine, which is located in the south-west area of the Montalcino hill, near the ancient village of Camigliano. The property had been abandoned for over 40 years and offered virgin land, which had never known the use of chemistry and modern and industrial agriculture. An ideal land to start from scratch and create a farm oriented towards the production of great wines. The first Cupano labels came out in 2000, with the idea of making great aging reds in the style of the most famous French wines, capable of synthesizing elegance, complexity and longevity. As a great lover of Burgundy wines, Lionel has implemented a vineyard philosophy on the estate based on high density of plants, low yields and production of grapes of the highest quality.
